This is a sad day. Pastoral caught me and told me one of my patients was discharging home to home hospice and died in the car when the family came to pick him up yesterday. He was touch and go for awhile and appeared to be perking up a bit.
We occasionally see what we call "the surge" where someone perks up right before dying. I didnt feel like I was seeing the surge yesterday but he had perked up a bit from my Monday treatment and was smiling when I worked with him on Tuesday. Hoist a drink for John tonight. He was a really nice man

Dammit. I assume this happens frequently. Was it Covid that got him? I will raise a glass for John tonight.

I will hoist for John. My wife works in hospice. I hear plenty of these stories.

Thanks guys. No Covid but he was ill. Had lost 100lbs in 6 months. He was 97lbs on a 5'6" frame.
I hate it that family had to see that happen. Would much rather have had him pass when I was working with him.

These are things that impact people in such a deep way and it usually takes some time to recover and get past it. Yet you see it so often. Maybe it makes everything else soooo much better in comparison.

Maybe it makes everything else soooo much better in comparison. There is no better feeling than that of helping people. We routinely change lives for the better when there is often no hope. You take the good with the bad. The good outweighs the bad. I'm happy to have known my patient even if it didn't turn out like I would have liked. He was smiling and happy when I treated him yesterday. I'm glad his last moments were not in misery. I feel like our hospice care professionals are saints. They usually know what the outcome will be and still go to work every day.

I raise my Oktoberfest to him along with you, Matt's wife and anyone that has to deal with these issues as part of their job. Nothing I could ever handle.

My rancher is still in the Covid unit. I go back in on Monday for 3 days. He is doing fair according to my colleagues but has no oxygen carrying capacity and drops to 70% oxygen when taking a few steps. 92% is the minimum we like for walking.
The gal who saw him today said the doc said he has "half a lung" I don't know if she meant half of one lung and the other works or only half of one lung total. I fear he only has half of one lung total.
So our Covid count has risen since college started. 1100+ college student cases. My wife's clinic has been testing 50 daily. She said the college kids are laughing and happy when they come up positive. One girl went to the parking lot and was high fiving her friends and dancing in the parking lot after getting her positive results.
I talked to one of out college interns and she said there are Covid positive parties going on on the U of A campus. They are happy because they don't need to social distance and also that they can't taste the alcohol in their drinks.

Palm, meet face. When she said that about the alcohol my jaw dropped. I had all but forgotten about how bad I thought booze tasted back when I was a stupid kid.

It also reminds me the worse stuff I drank in college was Rolling Rock.

First off... health professionals are the ones with jobs that have an emotional toll. I feel for you. And anytime someone says "so and so is going into hospice", I feel a sense of sadness at a life to be lost shortly. As for the COVID parties, etc. Ugh! There's so much we don't know, including whether you could actually get it again. As for the no taste... my cousin lost his sense of taste for 36 hours when he got it... said it was the weirdest thing in the world, so he drank some hot sauce. I'll tell ya... if I lost my sense of taste and there was a spicy food challenge, I'd go do it. He did say that he could feel the burn on the backside though... But, back to the original... I raise a glass to you and those you are treating.
