Even with mild cases, it looks like there may still be possible heart, lung, and other organ damage. They're saying it may be a worse "blood" disease than it is a "lung" disease. And immunity seems to only last a few months, so it's probably not one-and-done like measles, mumps, or chicken pox. So if that's the case, how long do you think a vaccine will protect you once it is available? Probably only a few months. So it's not gonna be "everybody line up for Covid-19 vaccine shots", then... BOOM... HERD MENTALITY! IT'S GONE!
So, yeah, cheers and thanks to all the health care workers out there.

We are seeing rising cases of demylinating processes like Guillan Barre since Covid started. When you trigger your immune system it is programmed to attack invaders to keep you healthy. It can also attack your healthy tissue.
Demylinating diseases happen when your immune system attacks the myelin (insulation) on your nerves. Like cutting the insulation off of wiring. These people can end up being paraplegic. I have a 24 year old who has Covid antibodies in his system who had this happen. He can't move any part of his body and can't even breathe on his own--he's currently on the ventilator.
I had him standing early on in the process and he passed out on me. I was holding him up (6"4" guy) unconscious while calling on my combadge for assistance.
I fear we are going to see rising cases related to the trigger of the immune system over the next 20 years.

My wife and I just went on a walk and were talking about some of this stuff like "no one alive has been through this before" and also the mental toll it's taking on some people especially people who are out of work. Suicides are up. Divorces are up. The fear, the depression, the isolation. It will probably take years or decades for studies to be done on all of the impacts the bug has had on people and that's just the people living through this and haven't even tested positive. The effects on those who fought the bug will probably take a long time to understand. Be strong Chils.

This week is just balls overall. I got a new stroke patient today. Didn't do anything on the initial evaluation. I had him up standing in 15 minutes and moving his supposedly non-working leg. He has great potential to recover but family said he didn't want to go thru Rehab again. I got my note in quickly this afternoon to make sure they knew that he progressed well with me. They decided to send him to hospice late today. This sucks!

I'm so sorry Chils. That sucks. Why on earth would they do that? Would Hospice agree to accept him if they knew he had good potential for improvement? I honestly don't know. There must be something more that we just don't know. But it's still sad.

The patient can't speak or swallow at this time due to the stroke and cant express his wishes. He told the family in the past that he didn't want to go thru Rehab again after doing it in the past.
He may or may not wish to keep living right now but can't express that. They go off of what the family directs them to.
When you fill out form for medical wishes when you can't express them you may take away your ability to recover. I've seen patients who filled out " no feeding tube" requests who went to hospice and could have made a near full recovery. Feeding tubes can be removed easily later if you regain your swallow ability. We see that recovery all the time.

My stroke patient left for hospice at 4PM today. I was charting next to his room and said goodbye to him as EMS was wheeling him out on the stretcher.
Got word that my rancher is going on the ventilator. Per the Drs he is done. Game over.
I had a charge sheet come back with a correction to be done. Entered the patient ID number and got the dreaded pop-up "This patient is deceased" right before clocking out for the day. It was John's charge and I didn't realize it, sat there looking at the screen wondering WTH I was seeing.
What a shitty, shitty week.

I feel like I'm watching a very compelling docu-drama on Netflix except this is Chils' real life. Can I move down there and open a brewpub with you so we can focus on Czech beers and put all of this unpleasantness in the rearview mirror?

Got nothing to offer but vibes, mang. It does indeed suck. Hope you have a cold one or twelve on hand.

Rancher is on the vent now and will not survive this
My bad charge sheet brought up a pop-up reminder that my 97lb pitiful man died Tuesday
Yes, Czech beers and restaurant to match. Gotta dig up some Czech old ladies to cook their recipes.

We need to have beer cheese and pig knee on the menu. Chils, you're an inspiration to us all. Our jobs and our responsibilities pale in comparison to yours. My bad workdays do not include people going to hospice or dying. I hope you have a few days off coming up. Grab one of those yard tools you have and take your mind off of work. Cheers to you.

Had to remove someone from PT today. Patient who really needs us but can't let go of enough control to allow us to help him. Dude has refused everyone in the dept. I offered to allow him to pick his own treatment time and do whatever he wanted to do with me yesterday and he refused.
I went in today and told him he needed us, was worsening, and would not get better until he let us help him. He told me he was doing his PT on his own when we weren't in the room. Since PT doesn't involve lying in bed 24hrs this is incorrect.
I educated him on what was happening and what needed to happen and he didn't seem to care.
It is sad because he isn't gonna get better but there isn't a way to get thru to him. He acts the same way with the doctors, wound care, and nurses. Refusing their treatments as well. He will probably be the cause of his own death due to flat out not allowing anyone to help him. Crazy folks in this world
