Is anyone still doing pallet orders from North Country Malting or the like? I remember NCM was shutting down new homebrewer accounts around the last time I ordered so I don't know if they are still doing that. Sacks of CMC 2-row were like $28/ea and Best Malz Pils was around $37. The shipping wasn't too bad, either, when you order a full pallet. I looked back at one of the old New Enlgand group buys I ran, shipping came out to $4-$5/sack. Nothing from NCM in years. There is a store in West Boylston that does a group buy in the fall, prices are not bad. My last few sacks were bought from a brewery. Homebrew emporium?

That's where I used to go for stuff when I lived in Leominster.
$64 shipped is actually less than you pay for a sack of pale male at a lot of LHBS. In the range anyway. I don't usually look at sacks of grain at the LHBS but IIRC when i have it's usually $65-$90.

You will be surprised at what you can do with these guys. I got 50 lbs of Briess pilsner malt for $29! Their shipped price for a sack of malt is less than I can buy it locally. I was rummaging around in my specialty malt bin this week and I see that I was running low on a number of things I use a lot... dark malt like carafa, caramunich, flaked corn and I have some nice German beers coming up with this Bayern yeast and I needed dark Munich so I just placed an order with LP. They do a good job, their prices are good, they have quick shipping and they are always accurate with their orders. I like ordering from them. I'll need to check out the website a bit more. I only bought small stuff this time because I got overnight shipping to ensure the yeast was healthy. Check out full sacks of Swaen Malt. I'm sure there are some people out there that would say it's not as good as some other malts but I find the pilsner and the "ale malt" to work very well and they are typically around $50. I have picked up sacks of Maris Otter or Golden Promise here locally that were approaching (and in some cases over) $100 for 50-55 pounds!

I think that $29 sack would have been close to $64ish shipped to me. Mmm, I do seem to remember that. I am also within the regional shipping area for Ritebrew's local shipper "SpeeDee". It makes Ritebrew a good choice for things as well.

Looks like Fedex ground to my location is about $22-$23 per sack.
ETA: The shipped price per sack is definitely a bit less than I can get at the LHBS. Muntons MO would come in at ~$80/sack, I've seen it for $90 at the LHBS.

I will look at it again but it is easy enough for me to text my guy at Exhibit A and have it brought to town and pay him.

My next day order showed up the next day, so that's good. I had ordered some yeast along with an insulated envelope and ice packs. Inside the envelope it was cool, not cold. Maybe 50-60F.

Placed another LP order today. My sack of Swaen Pils is almost gone. I went to order another and... they're out of stock. So I looked further and found Swaen Lager Malt. It says that it's the lightest in color. You would think that distinction would go to the pilsner malt. I really dislike the way Swaen labels their stuff but I do like the products so Lager Malt it is. It says Lager malt is the obvious choice when you want to make a pilsner. AHH! Stop not making sense! I also ordered some Saaz. I saw somewhere that Bayern would make a fine Czech Lager and I happen to have it up and running now. I also feel like this copper malt produces a beer that looks very much like the color of a Czech beer when you use about 7-8% of it in the mash. So I'm going to combine pilsner or lager malt, some copper malt (and maybe some other stuff) and then add Saaz as a FWH and 30 minute addition and get the IBUs up to 35 or so and finish it all off with Bayern. Boom. Cheers kids.

Just saw this a few minutes ago: LP is now carrying grains from Warminster Maltings.
Looks like they're only available in 55lb bags, at least for now, but next time I need some MO, I'm going to check Warminster out.

Bought a 55-lb sack of Avangard Pale Ale malt from LP today for $36. Got some hops too. I have some ales coming up and my supply of pale ale malt is low. Great price, methinks. It looks like they're having a grain sale at the moment.

I cannot touch that number locally. Some local sacks of pale ale malt I found (when I could actually find a place to sell a full sack) were in the $80-$90 range.

Shipping for me is about $26...this is pretty tempting! I usually pay $2/# for base malt so this is a good price. And my LHBS isn't the most convenient to get to.
Ken, are smaller bags of specialty malt added to an order worth it? Or do they charge too much additional for smaller bags?

Ken, are smaller bags of specialty malt added to an order worth it? Or do they charge too much additional for smaller bags? I think the prices are good across the board but check to see what 10-lb bags will cost of the various brands and styles of malt. They also process orders amazingly fast. I ordered this on Saturday and got an email on Sunday that it had shipped. It will be here Tuesday or Wednesday. The shipping absolutely needs to be taken into account but considering that the closest place to me (that sells by the sack) is an hour drive there and back and has never, ever had any malt for even close to $36 for 55 pounds... LP is always a win and it gets delivered to my door.
