Munich Classic = Hefeweizen character with banana & clove? Absolutely! Compare: Munich
Munich Classic
I never had any problem getting banana (My first attempt at a hefe, I fermented really hot... Monkeys would come out of the trees when you poured one!) I think Munich Classic gives better clove notes than the liquid hefe yeasts I've tried (WLP 300 and WY3068). Noticeable, but not overpowering.

I do have the Munich Classic. All grain for me, though. I'll look for a recipe. I've had such good luck with extract, that I've never brewed an all-grain hefe! I probably should try it.

#17 is Turbo Prop Imperial Pils by Propeller Getränke in Bad Laasphe. 6.5% ABV I found this description on their website (translated): Do you like pils? -Very well. Do you also like a lot of taste? -Even better. This beer is not an ordinary Pilsener but an Imperial Pilsner. It has more of everything. More taste, more hops, more malt and more alcohol. In addition, it is cold-hopped with the noble hops variety "Citra" in the cold ripening cellar. The result is an incredibly fruity beer with a fantastic mango note. Although it was fermented with the classic Bosch Pils yeast, you could almost think it was a top-fermented beer. In addition, it has a very good drinkability, so that you can enjoy it all evening. This was quite malty, medium body, almost too sweet... but it did have a decent hop bitterness. From the description, I was hoping for a brighter, fresher Citra flavor and some more aroma, but it was still pretty good. The can sports a drawing of a VERY excited aviator!

Nice. I like the Germans using some Citra. Also, I like your comment I never had any problem getting banana. It's fruity, it's kind of dirty, it's got the monkey lingo... it should probably be on a t-shirt.

Could have been worse... I might have said, "I get banana up the wazoo!"

I am not going to comment on bananas or wazoos. 😂
However, I do find it interesting that the brewer is comparing the Pils to an Ale as if the Ale was the superior beer vs the Pils. I don’t know why, but I usually perceive brewers who brew Pils speak about it as if it is the superior beer. 🤷♂️. I never felt that way personally but I get that platitude from Pils brewers.
I like the Pils glass.

#19 is Zwönitzer Rauchbier by Privatbrauerei H. Egerer in Grossköllnbach. 4.8% ABV Same brewer as #3 Alms Hell and #15 Perlenzauber IPA. Pours a dark cola-brown with a short-lived tan head. Aroma and flavor are just campfire and some hop bitterness. As you can probably tell, not one of my favorite styles! (Although I do like Alaskan Smoked Porter! It's been a long time, but I remember Alaskan being more balanced that this). It doesn't taste bad... It's just not a flavor I want in beer, and to me, the smoke in this is overwhelming.

Did you ever get the impression that some beer-loving Germans were looking for different styles of beer... a sort of "The grass is greener" sort of thing? They're surrounded by all those lagers so you might wonder if they ever looked around for Belgians, English beers, American beers, etc. That story about the people in Vienna slurping down the IPA makes me wonder if they're sometimes just looking for something different. Mexico is similar. Lots of light lagers and also a good number of darker lagers or what you might call a Mexican Vienna Lager. So many examples of the same styles... Sol, Tecate, Corona, Modelo, Dos Equis, Bohemia and then Indio, Negra Modelo, Victoria, Dos Equis Amber, Leon, Bohemia Oscura. I have heard that there is a draft beer explosion going on down there (mainly in Mexico City) because people want change and they want options.

I was in Germany ‘87-‘90. The people I hung out with were less concerned about the style of beer and more concerned with the people we were with, the conversations, relationships, places we visited, etc. The beer was not the center of the event. It was a social lubricant for the event.
The best beer I ever had was sitting in a Biergarten …or Shutzenhaus …or swimbad …or market with locals and/or friends on a warm Spring/hot Summer/crisp Fall/cold Winter evening enjoying the music, food and conversation, laughing and having a great time. I had a million of those experiences and each one was the best beer I ever drank.
I usually went for local beers by simply asking the waitress/waiter for what they like. My favorites were the Hausbrauerei. Rarely was I disappointed.

#20 is Kirta Dunkles Weissbier by Graminger Weissbräu in Altötting. 5.0% ABV. I like this one a lot! Dark and rich, this is a real malt bomb! A bit on the sweet side, with banana notes and just a hint of clove. Bready malt flavor without any roasted flavors.

I was at my weekly bowling league last night and out of the blue one guy says "So I picked up this great assortment of beers at Costco called the Brewers Advent Calendar" and I was all HEY!! SERIOUSLY!! He said that all the beers he's tried so far have been excellent. He also told me that he's going to Costco this week and would pick one up for me! So hopefully I have it next week when I see him. Of course I'll be behind so I'll just have to drink them all in one night.

I took my oldest out for his 21st birthday last nite. I was the fuddy duddy saying slow down. Both sons were looking at me like I was a bore.

The 23-yo visits and just can't seem to stay away from those draft faucets. He gets the largest of my beer glasses and then refills it a little quicker than I would like to see. It's funny when you have draft beer in your house. I can't tell you how many people want a picture of themselves tapping beer.

I drank local because it was ridiculously cheap at the time. I used to get Berliner Kindl for about $5/case. But this was before micro/craft beer really started to come on the scene.
