Picked this up at Costco last month, $60 for 24 different 500ml cans of obscure German beers from smaller breweries. Looked like a good opportunity to try some different things. I remembered that it was in the basement last night, and had already had a couple beers, so, I'm not exactly on schedule. Beer #1 was Grantler Hell by Schlossbrauerei, Herrngiersdorf. Described on the can as a "Grumpy German Helles". 4.9% ABV. Exp date: 2023/05. Poured a bright, clear yellow. Not much head. Nice grainy aroma. Slightly sweet taste. Restrained noble hops. Very nice! If this is any indication, I'm looking forward to the next 23! Will probably have 2 tonight to get back on schedule.

I remember seeing that last year at Costco. I thought about it but a bit pricey for my cheap ass!

I remember seeing that last year at Costco. I thought about it but a bit pricey for my cheap ass! I picked it up while in Costco... hemmed and hawed... set it down, then picked it back up... and my wife said, "Oh! Just get it!" She didn't have to say that twice! Here's what the packaging looks like. You punch in the number in the upper right corner, and you can then peel off the cover that reveals the top of a can.

#2 is Hoamat Weissbier, by Privatbrauerei M.C. Wieninger in Teisendorf. 5.6% ABV. Exp date: 2023/05 (I'm guessing this date is the same on all... stamped on the bottom of the can by the company that assembled the package.) This is a very typical hefeweizen with a slightly cloudy amber color, foamy white head, notes of clove and banana (not too overpowering), and just enough hops that you know they're there. Yummy! The can says: "Höchste Braukultur aus Teisendorf" and "Gebraut mit Rohstoffen aus Bayern" Which Google Translate tells me means: "Highest brewing culture from Teisendorf" and "Brewed with raw materials from Bavaria"

#3 is Alms Hell from Privatbrauerei H. Egerer in Pilsting-Grossköllnbach 5.2% ABV. I used a Samuel Adams Lager glass. I like these glasses a lot, but I forget that I have them. This is similar to the previous Helles Lager, but a bit hoppier. I get a bit of grassiness from the hops.

Yeah, my wife would have said, just get it, too! I should stop by tomorrow and bring her with me! If they still have them.

#4 is Husarentrunk from Schloßbrauerei Rheder in Brakel. 5.3% ABV. Kind of a mystery. Various websites identify this as a Dortmunder Export, a Dampfbier, a Marzen, or an Oktoberfestbier. The brewery's website translation simply calls it "Hussar drink". Hussar being 15th-16th century European horse soldiers. To me it tastes and drinks like an Oktoberfestbier. Malty, toasty, slightly spicy noble hop flavor. Large, fluffy head when first poured (it had fallen back some when this photo was taken.)

#5 is Der Schwarze Bock by Kraftbierwerkstatt in Böblingen. 6.2% ABV Pulled out my 500ml mug for this one. I had high hopes for this... maybe the can design made me think it would be bolder! Don't get me wrong, it's not bad at all! It looks more like root beer than the pitch black I was expecting! This is malty and a bit sweet. The alcohol is well hidden and it drinks really smoothly. Just enough hop bitterness to keep it from being cloying.

Oh man, that is awesome! I'm not a Costco member so someone send me one! I always hear that there are a ton of breweries in Germany that we've never heard of. That looks right up my alley. I love this logo:

I love this logo: I need to visit Germany. “Nowadays, grandson Leopold dedicated a special beer to her grandmother: The Schwarzbräu "Marie Hausbrendel" with its mild, fresh and well balanced taste: Typical Bavarian. Typical Helles.” - www.marie.bayern/en/

#6 is Zwikl Kellerbier by Herrnbräu in Ingolstadt. 5.0% ABV Kellerbier ("Cellar Beer") is an unpasteurized and unfiltered lager. Hence the slightly hazy appearance. This seems to be more carbonated than most of the German Lagers I've tried. Hoppier, too. Just a hint of yeastiness. Another good one! You probably can't read the etching on the glass... It says, "Michelob Specialty Ales & Lagers"... I think I got 2 of them in a Michelob Holiday Gift Pack quite a few years ago.

The first beer I had when I got to Europe was a Zwickl at a little outdoor spot in Vienna where they had a bunch of tents set up... some had beer, some had food, some were little "hookah lounges", etc. I also remember that glass. I used to buy the 12er variety pack of those Michelob specialty beers. One was a Marzen, I remember. One was a pale ale.
