Remodel

Well... since the day we moved into this house in 2015, my wife has wanted to remodel the 3/4 of the first floor (kitchen, pantry, dining room, entry). Met with the GC last night to get the bid. Hopefully we don't come out of this divorced!
I was thinking that this was going to waylay my plans to build a wood fired oven in the backyard, but as I thought about it last night... with all the disruption in the house, it may actually be the perfect time to do it if 1/2 the house is unusable. Would give me something to do outside.

Looks like work starts on Monday... sort of. We are doing the demo. Wish we had the dumpster here this weekend.
Wife is on board with the Wood Fired Oven. Tentative plans are to actually use some of the same finishing materials (tiles, mosaic, countertop) to tie it in with the new kitchen.
Oh... did pull off some baseboard last night to confirm the laminate is a floating floor. Took up a couple of runs and it is 98% floating. The prior fuckers that lived here needed to replace a couple of small spots, so it looks like they glued it down with the strongest shit you could find! Am guessing that will have to be replaced.

Document it here in pics. We won't be laughing WITH you, we'll be laughing AT you! Sincerely, big projects like that are tough. Our kitchen remodel (which also included flooring throughout part of the 1st floor, the laundry room, bathroom, etc) took 3+ months. We had new wood flooring added upstairs a couple years ago... everything upstairs had to be moved downstairs. Ugh. I'm gettin' too old for this!

I think we will have 1 to 2 weeks to accomplish the demolition. And then the GC comes in. We were told 8 to 10 weeks. They try to keep it at a pretty good clip. I'm hoping we can do the demo by the end of next weekend.
And yes, it really is a first floor remodel. The Formal Living Room, Formal Dining Room, Kitchen and Kitchen eating area are all getting the treatment. The Family Room is a step down and is essentially already done, so nothing needs to be done there right now. But that's the entire first floor in a nutshell. We are creating a massive open kitchen with a 36 inch oven in what was the Kitchen (including eating area) and Formal Dining room, building out a pantry in a portion of the Formal Living room and converting the Formal Living Room into the Dining Room. Will try to post pics as and when I can... which is to say when the wife posts them, then I can grab them. I'm terrible about pics.

Feck!
The rough HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical all passed inspection. Drywall and first coat of paint went up. Flooring go installed. It was too good to be true!
Then Friday night we get an e-mail... due to COVID the shipment of cabinets is 25 weeks delayed!!! FECKITY FECK FECK FECK!!!
They told us at the outset that there could be potential delays, but one hopes!
Cabinets were supposed to come this Friday (the 4th)... now they won't be here until 15th! Hoping that the GC coordinates subs appropriately so that our project maintains its spot in the priority.

Yeah, 25 weeks? That's a half a year! For you to be delayed only 2 weeks seems okay compared to six months. I always like to see the work in action. I take pics along the way and hang onto them. The finished product is always fun to see so post them when you have them, please.

Whoops! 2.5 TWO-POINT-FIVE.
Nah... I'd be throwing bricks through the window at the GC's office if it were 25 weeks and telling them to find another supplier.

There are a lot of delays because of the Rona. I ordered new window well covers that are polycarbonate. My old ones are just metal mesh/cage-like and they're rusting and they let a lot of leaves and debris in. They are custom-made and won't be sent out to me for something like 12-14 weeks. They told me it would be more like 2-3 weeks but the Rona has thrown a monkey wrench into things. Mark, the end result will be awesome and worth it. Just try to keep your sanity between now and then.

Yeah, I ordered new garage doors yesterday... 6 weeks until they'll be shipped to the installler. Luckily, it only took five days to get a new washing machine last week.

You have to get creative. When our kitchen was being done, they moved our old fridge into the dining room. We also had our toaster oven in there, an electric wok and the microwave. No, it didn't satisfy the urge to cook but at least we didn't have to order pizza every night. Washing dishes is interesting too. We have no "deep sink" in our house so we washed dishes in the tub that's in the kids' bathroom. Man, that sucked. But imagine how great it will be when you can cook in your new kitchen. It will be worth it.
