When you get that stainless steel screw, you might want to get a stainless steel flat washer, too. Will keep the small screw head from digging in to the plastic too much.

That's just silly enough to work.

First brewday with the new mash cap yesterday. For a quick solution I did use a short piece of twine with a knot underneath and a loop on top. It worked well. My cutting of the HDPE (questionable) allowed a small amount of wort to creep up on top of it but there was only a small amount (maybe ½" in places)... otherwise the cap floated for the full hour. Super easy to clean... just rinse it off and put it in the sun. The old, stinky foil-covered mash cap went out in the trash. Cheers and thanks again guys.

A wood-paneled station wagon is going to pick me up and take me to the grammar insane-a-rorium.

How’s the mash cap hanging in there Ken? This is the contraption I came up with. It’s an Ss Brewtech recirculation manifold attached to a 13” SS Pizza Pan. It fits snug into an Infussion mash tun with a Brew Bag as a lauter/recirculating aid atop a false bottom. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'm still not sure what is going on.

I'm still not sure what is going on. I recirculate throughout the 60-90 min mash. Flow goes from the MLT drain ball valve > pump > rotameter > sight glass > HERMS > three way valve > bulkhead fitting in the MLT wall > recirculation manifold on top of the grain bed which return wort under the liquid level. With this mash cap I push the assembly down onto the liquid level so the manifold is still under the liquid and the cap is protecting the surface from air diffusion.

My homemade HDPE mash cap is still working beautifully as I would expect... it's a simple device, super durable, easy to clean, etc. I'm much more about simple but that looks good, BB. When I talk about the LO-stype steps that I take, I often forget about the mash cap but I use it every time without fail.

What (if anything) are you using for a lauter cap? I use a cake pan. It doesn’t go wall to wall because I have a whirlpool arm and side pickup dip tube in my kettle but it covers most of the surface.
