Hey, that's excellent. Okay so first off... cutting that with a jigsaw is no problem, I assume. Secondly, that material being in/next to/on top of the mash is no problem? The material won't leach into the wort, have an issue with the temp being 150° or the pH being slightly acidic? If all of that is good... I think I'm ordering it. Trace around my existing cap, cut it and then drill a hole in the middle for a pull so I can get it out. NOICE! Thanks Jim!

You're going to be right at the edge of the operating temperature of HDPE... but I think you'll be OK. McMaster-Carr lists 180 F as max. operating temperature for their polyethylene products. I've also seen 160 F listed. The melting point of HDPE is way up at 130 deg C. (266 F). It's definitely food safe. I'd be more worried about using a cooler as a mash tun than having this on top! Also, HDPE is less dense than water. It floats! Should be easy to cut with a jigsaw. (Edit: Yikes! Just looked at shipping...) Same thing 20"x15"x1/2", a little bit more ($22), but with free Amazon Prime shipping: www.amazon.com/Professional-Plastic-Cutting-Restaurants-Dishwasher/dp/B078GLNQHK/

Anything dish washer safe I expect will also be mash tun safe.

Send me the exact dimension you need. I have scrap HDPE in my arsenal and a circle cutting jig. Won't take me 10 mins to cut you a perfect circle. Is it exactly 12-1/2" or would 12-5/8" be better? The circle cutter has 1/16" increments.

This keeps getting better and better! 12-5/8" is actually perfect. I think my cylinder-shaped cooler is slightly tapered getting wider at the top. When I rest this current cap on top of the wort there is a small amount of play in it. JKor, are you sure? You have so many projects on your plate I don't want to give you another one. But if you do it... you'll either have to let me send you dollah billz or something else that I have that you want. I have four 4" faucet shanks sitting in boxes... want to mounts faucets so you can serve your beer through a wall? They're yours! Cheers and thanks.

I could but I package NOTHING these days (except in kegs). Nothing. I have not bottled in ages. Not all of us are as fancy-pants as Drez with his canning system!

Turns out what i have is delrin not HDPE. It's food grade but it appears it's not as good as HDPE in acidic environments. Your call.

When I mentioned temperature and pH he waved me off like pfft! no problem! but I honestly don't know. Should I use the Google machine to make my decision?

Interesting. According to THIS, delrin (or POM) does not like acids in general and it also shows that it does not like calcium chloride or calcium sulfate. I don't know what levels we're talking about here but it does raise the eyebrows. Maybe someone with more experience could chime in on that. I was actually concerned about covering my current cap with foil. Someone mentioned that the pH could start wearing away the foil but then a number of others said that it would have to be VERY LOW pH and for REALLY extended periods of time for that to happen. Still... I would like something stable and easy to clean. Thanks for looking into it JKor... I appreciate it.

Doesn't look like it's the best material. Polypropylene or HDPE seem to be better choices.

Maybe I'll look into the cutting board option that Jim posted. Something I read earlier suggests that delrin is easier to cut so I hope the HDPE is not a pain for me to form. Sounds better though, I agree. Thank you for the offer though. Much appreciated.
