I'm looking to do a Dortmunder with my packet of WLP833. I would typically have a ferm chamber for lagers but I don't have anything set up right now. It looks like the corner of my basement is currently around 52. What says the BG lager crew? Will ambient 52 hold the 833 in check enough to keep off flavors away?

Optimum is 48° to 55° so that sounds okay to me. You can allow the beer to ferment to about 50% (give or take) and then allow it to warm up for the rest of the fermentation. Any off-flavors that you might encounter typically happen early in the process and once you're over the halfway point you can allow it to warm, finish up, and clean up any flavors like diacetyl or sulphury flavors. I know you said you might jack up the hops which sounds good. Please post the recipe... I might take a swing at it.

It should be ok in a pinch. If you can, try to get the fermenter over near an outside wall; that should help a bit to keep the temps down.
Any chance you can rig up a swamp cooler? That would definitely help keep the temps from getting too warm.

JKor, if you can do that, it will possibly be in the high 40s which appears to be okay for this yeast.

Used it many times; useally pitch at 55*, with no issues.

Thanks for the replies. I do have the ability to piece together a makeshift fermentation chiller if necessary. It may all be moot, though, since my WLP833 starter isn't showing any activity after ~18 hrs. ETA: I spoke too soon! We have bubbles!
