Anybody do this? Decided to give it a whirl for the brew club. The reasons why: the LHBS closed, and while we have connections for bulk grain at Keystone homebrew supply, yeast is harder to come by. A lot of guys are leary of ordering yeast in the mail. So, for access to yeast locally, and a fund raiser. The end goal is to have a sizeable library at the ready. The methodology was this. Just curious if anyone here partakes. Doing a test starter on 2 frozen vials with A24. Will know in a couple of days.

I was never confident enough in my scientific discipline to do this. I would envision a lot of work on my part only to pitch contaminated yeast. I have multiple local source for liquid yeast and I have no issues ordering yeast through the mail. On top of that .. dry yeast has come a long way both ale and lager so I rely on the people who handle yeast professionally to supply me with my yeast. Also, I have the upmost respect for yeast and it always feels like a mystery to me. I harvest it from a fermenter and I have it in a sanitized flask and I look at it but what do I see? A blob. I don't know how many viable cells are there, whether most of the yeast is dead, if it's morphed into something else, whether it's contaminated, etc. I can look at it and I can smell it. Other than that .. I get on my knees and wave my arms in that "I'm not worthy" way.

Ken,
Don't have the gear count cells, but making a starter for a 1.055 brown ale- non scientific, but more of a make or break test next weekend.
If it ferments out and makes drinkable beer, I'd call it a success. If I can get 20+ pitches from one yeast pack, it'll be a good loss leader for the club. Have a couple new to the club brewers joining a meeting next week- expiranced hands, but more or less giving a reason to join the club.

I ranched yeast for years before I decided it was more of a PITA than I wanted to deal with. I didn't watch the video, but I assumem you're using glycerine and reculturing every 6 months or so. Not use a frost free fridge? FF fridge will kill the yeast fast.

Process is make a starter, Fill yeast slurry with cryto solution,in test tubes. place vials in a 91% rubbing alcohol bath for 2-3 days to lower temperature, place in a small cooler in the freezer. I have a dedicated manual defrost freeze in the garage. No re-pitching every 3-6 months.
