This is a commercial beer in Austin brewed by Live Oak Brewing. I first had it in the airport and I thought it was delicious. It had this pale amber color and simple and straightforward character. The original recipe was 60/40 pilsner/Munich 2, 24 IBUs of Hallertau Mittelfruh and then an ounce of HM with one minute left in the boil. The brewer told me they used 34/70. I made it and used 2124 a few times. On visits to Austin I would notice that it seemed to get darker over time and my kids noticed it too. Earlier this year I thought I would try to make the beer and get it close to the way it was when I first had it. I used a 65/35 grist and my Munich was Briess Bonlander. I think the color was slightly more pale than I intended (maybe the Bonlander is a bit more pale than other Dark Munich malts?) but I think I inadvertently created the perfect beer color .. at least for me. Sadly this keg went belly-up yesterday but it will absolutely be my next batch coming up with Novalager. 65% Avangard Pils, 35% Bonlander, 24 IBUs HM to bitter and one ounce for one minute and Nova. The grist could be multi-purpose too .. use different hops, hop it higher or lower, use different yeast strains, etc.
