I went to my supplier today and went to the yeast fridge and was like What in Satan's fire? because there was no Wyeast anymore. She said she stopped carrying it. I told her I was looking for 2124 and she handed me Omega German Lager 1. She said it's 2124. The dates were April so she gave me 2 for 1. I am making one more batch with 940 and then retiring it and then I'll make an SNS starter with the 2 packs of this Omega.

I have not used that one but I have always had good luck with Omega yeast. I am sure it will be great.

I brought this topic over to AHA and someone mentioned that Omega German Lager 1 IS NOT 2124, which is discouraging. But the descriptors for the yeast contain that classic "the most used lager strain in the world" and the fact that it functions well in a wide range of temps. That sounds like Weihenstephan to me. I'm going to feed it some wort and see what it does.

There is a German Lager 2 by Omega that is supposed to be similar to 2308/838 so maybe that's the OYL114.

I have used it many times and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that yeast. I'm sure I will brew with it when I'm done with this OYL106 because I pretty much bounce between 940, 2124 and BAYERN. I honestly can't remember another lager strain I have used in the last 3-4 years other than those three.

I made an SNS starter with these two packs of yeast on Friday. The starter was quiet until Sunday morning which was a nice piece of luck considering the plan was to brew Sunday. Starter was very active and smelled lovely and I pitched it into a non-descript gold lager with Pilsner malt, Copper malt and Spalt Select. I have a bunch of recipes drawn up to use with this yeast... Vienna, Red Lager, another general-purpose gold lager, a festbier, a pilsner, etc. If this yeast is truly more like 830 than 2124 then I'm in for a treat because I do love me some 830 and haven't used it in a loooooooong time. Cheers Beerheads.
