I switch off between the two for that very reason. I used to use iodophor but switched to starsan a while back. I still have a big bottle so I think I'll start switching back and forth as well I've heard that iodophor is "broader spectrum" and can take out some things that Starsan cannot. Iodophor still smells like "brewing" to me and it also still stains as it always has so there is that. I am currently out of it so I should probably pick up more. Also, I use Starsan solution to clean the kettle and get the beerstone off of it. Iodophor doesn't help with that but it's not a reason to not use it.

I assume this is correct and I have never had a string of beers brewed with Starsan that seemed contaminated and NOT had a string of beers brewed with iodophor with the same issues. On the LO forum they were talking about iodophor being preferred because of the broader spectrum. Someone mentioned that they can pick up the flavor of the iodophor in the finished beer which is weird because I have never, ever picked up it although it DOES have an odor and (I assume) a flavor. Because of that this poster was saying they would have to find a new sanitizer because Starsan was not effective enough and the flavor of iodophor was being picked up in the final beer. But... some of the people in that LO camp did wring their hands over [what I would call] tiny details.

I am very skeptical of someone being able to detect it in the finished beer. If that's true they must be tasting it in alot of foods and beverages as well.

Did you ever find the culprit?

Not 100% sure. I think it was a Speidel fermenter. I hit it hard with oxy and multiple sanitizers. The first batch I did with it afterwards came out fine. I'm still keeping a close eye on the situation.

I know. You never *really* know if the speck you find is the speck ruining the beer.
