If i ever finish, anyway. The shear pin on my post hole digger broke on the first post hole. My soil has an absurd amount of rocks in it. Fortunately the shear pin is just a 5/16" 3" long bolt and i have a handful of spares. I'll pick it up tomorrow. Hopefully i'll get the posts set tomorrow and finish the paver leveling.

The first post hole I busted shear pin and finished with the manual post hole digger. The second hole I hit concrete a foot under the surface. What the actual feck?! I've been digging in this area for the past year and have never seen any concrete. I'm ready to sledgehammer a muthafecker right now.

Honestly, this doesn't even make sense, it's right next to the curb i installed last year and the curb is 6" deeper than where I've hit this concrete. So I just happened to install a 90 degree corner of curb right around this chunk of concrete? Ugh.
Thankfully, holes #3 and #4 went off fine. I think I would have had an aneurysm if something went wrong on #3.

Despite the setback on the concrete i have to say i kicked this patio's ass today. I got all the posts and lighting up. I put the firepit on the patio now i'm enjoying a victory beer(s) and cigar by the fire with some tunes. Happy Memorial Day, feckers!

Thanks, chils. Now I just need to get the motivation to finish leveling the stone and top off the wall. Motivation is looking a little far off in the distance today.

That looks awesome, JKor! I have been working my butt off around the house this spring, mostly outside. Spreading mulch, trimming shrubs, cleaning up a spot that was overgrown with weeds, working on the pool, pressure cleaning all kinds of stuff, etc. I have some brickwork in the front, around the side and in the backyard. The brick guys sends me an estimate to pressure wash it, add new sand between the bricks and then seal everything. His estimate this year was $4400. I sent him an email saying that my brick probably needed it but that I thought his quote was steep. I said something about how he may not get as much work because of the virus and to let me know if he would want to do my brick for less. He got pissed at me and said "I REJECT your offer!". Well, it really wasn't an offer. Anyway, a few weeks ago I cleaned up the part in front. There was some moss, etc. and I cleaned all that up. The sand is in good shape. Yesterday I did the part on the side... scraped off a bunch of moss and weeds, pressure washed and then resanded with polymeric sand. Today I'm going to get some sealer that I can use in a sprayer and seal the front and the side. The back is the biggest part and I'll do that later. It'll be nice if the guy gets back to me saying he wants to clean it. Sorry man, I did it myself! Cheers guys. Ps. My knees hurt.

I couldn't get the sprayer to do what I wanted. I also learned that when you seal brick or stone it's really better if you apply it with a brush or roller. Spraying it seems to be uneven and you're not working the product into the surface. So that changed the project from "small" to what looked like "all of today and part of tomorrow!". I started with a roller and then worked up to a roller on a long handle so I didn't have to be on my knees. I finished part of the side of the house and then did the next part and then remembered that the directions said to apply two coats. FARG! But I'm done now. I found some Valspar exterior protectant for brick and stone and it has a "wet look". Much better...

$4400 seems insane. I don't know what is involved or how much brick you have but i would assume cleaning and sealing a good sized brick patio would be $1000 tops.

I agree, $4400 is nuts. There is a patio in the backyard that might be 40x20... maybe larger. Then there is a spot in front from the driveway to the front door that might be 15x15 (it's an odd shape) and then there is a walkway from the front around to the back where it meets up with the other patio and that walkway is what I did this weekend because it needed it the most. I'm also at the point where I realize that when you ask someone else to do it, the price always seems insane and then you're not even that happy with it. The guys that do this are messy. There will be brick sealer all over everything... the sliding glass door, the metal coping around the pool, on low voltage lighting, everywhere. I ask them to be neat but they're not. I get it... they have to work quickly to make money but the result is less then desirable so I honestly just feel better knowing that I will do it the way I want it done because I care. Yes I will be sore, so what? Now it's beer o'clock and I can give Mr. $4400 a one-fingered salute!
