On Sunday, August 1 we're having a big shindig here with a wide array of people in our family and some extended visitors as well. A good 5-6 people that are here are either vegetarian or vegan, I'm not sure but plan to find out. When people are over my wife and I usually make a plan and carry it out and that might be burgers, dogs and brats, chicken, seafood skewers, steaks, some kind of pork chops or pork tenderloin and a number of other things along with salads, sides, etc. I mentioned to my wife that I don't mind cooking but someone else should be directing the menu because I don't know if I have the chops (HA! I said chops) to curate a vegan/vegetarian menu. That said, it might be good for me to have a couple of ideas bouncing around my coconut. Has anyone made or been served an ass-kicking vegan/vegetarian dish? Should I just grill up a bunch of veggie skewers and toast some naan bread on the BGE? How careful do I have to be out keeping things separate on the grill (there will be meat-eaters here too)? Finally, I clarify my beers with gel which is derived from the hooves of animals. Must I disclose this? The vegetarians are beer-drinkers AFAIK. Thanks and Cheers Beerheads.

Not I. We’re all carnivores here. …but I do think you should tell your vegan friends that you used gelatin to fine your beer. Maybe disclose ahead of time and ask for their favorite beverage so you can have some on ice.

My son was here this past week and his girlfriend's dad is from Turkey where there is a lot of Mediterranean cooking, including lots of meatless dishes. My wife thought it would be better to find a place that specializes in some of this stuff and it turns out that there are THREE places like this near us that have a lot of options: Various flatbreads, hummus, grape leaves filled with all kinds stuff, various tomato, onion and garlic things that resemble pico de gallo (but cooked down more), saffron rice, things made with chickpeas, etc. Apparently my son and his girlfriend will go to a place in Austin called CAVA... it's like a Mediterranean version of "Chipotle". There is meat there too but apparently you can create a nice bowl that doesn't contain meat. This seems like a good way to go: Leave it up to the professionals. Meanwhile, I can grill some things for others who are here that want chicken, steak, etc.
