I know that there's not much talk about the Quarantine here. I know its really beating people down. Fortunately, I've figured out a way to connect with my local friends. Literally, the furthest is 2 miles as the crow flies. We do use Zoom every Friday night, but we've kicked it up a notch and don't talk about the Quarantine or the issues we are experiencing because of it. We have one woman who runs the lab at a local clinic, a 911 Operator (who is also on a Fire Department) and a few teachers. It's frigging draining on everybody. So, I came up with a way to play a game based on the old show "Name That Tune".
I developed a spreadsheet. Each category can handle three songs, each with a difficulty rating of 1, 2, or 3. The difficulty rating is based solely on how much time is available to bid against (30 seconds, 25 seconds and 20 seconds). So, if someone picks a song, they can say "we can answer that in 12 seconds" and the 18/13/8 seconds that were shaved off are multlpied by a factor of 1, 2 or 3.5. It's weird, but it works. We have been playing it so that the group goes against me (the GameMaster). All the songs are on Spotify and I'm able to start and stop the songs very easily... go back and replay. It's very slick.
Anyways... if anyone wants to see the Spreadsheet I'd be happy to share. You can change the categories and songs very easily. Creating the Spotify playlist is easy. I can also share the Spotify playlist for this exact group. Zoom allows the moderator to share audio to the group.
This has helped us keep a semblance of sanity. We spent 3 hours on this tonight, and not once did anyone mention anything about the virus or quarantine. At the end, we talk about categories for next week. I'll build from there.
It's a tough time right now. Do what you can to keep a sense of normalcy.

Resourceful, for sure. It's good that you found something to help keep the sanity. We have been doing Zoom calls with our kids, nieces, nephews, SIL, BIL, my inlaws, etc. but we're just making it a "HAPPY HOUR" and talking about general topics which may or may not include the virus. The biggest issue there is that my FIL just talks over everyone else (which he does in person too) but it's worse on the Zoom call because you can't just TALK... you really need to wait for an opening. It's a dance. It's quite frustrating and I can only take it for so long. I had a Zoom call for work and I started having nightmares that my FIL was going to Zoom-Bomb my meeting.

I'll say playing a game keeps people from dominating! I had a similar experience with my dad and his siblings. They were ALL like that!

Just jump all over you in mid-sentence. They have no idea what you were about to say because you only got 50% of the words out of your mouth. Conversation is a sort of artform and part of it includes listening. They never got that. We were at Easter dinner one year and no one was talking. I spoke up and said, "So I was watching the Cubs game yesterday" and my wife's aunt said, "OMG, that play at second base" and then my MIL said, "Our manager just doesn't know when to pull the pitcher"... meanwhile my FIL is waving his arms and finally shouts "WAIT! WAIT! I HAVE A PREDICTION! I DON'T THINK THE CUBS ARE GOING TO HAVE A WINNING SEASON!!" and I just watched and kept my mouth shut as the conversation continued.

I tend to steer clear of people who cannot do both talk and listen. It IS part of the game. The CUBS are definitely off to a slow start this year and I sure miss baseball season. I really do. I did the "House Party" thing with friends and family a couple times. Not for me. The wife and I have one puzzle made and are on number two. And we play Gin. Every night is movie night as of late when we can pull away the boy from the almighty Xbox.

In physics, one of the major jumps of the late 1800s was when they determined the e/m ratio. It's the electrical charge of one electron over its mass. The exact charge and mass weren't know until later as a result of the Millikan Oil Drop experiment. That's cool stuff to geeks like me, but it leads me to another more practical e/m ratio - ears/mouth. Considerate people strive to keep it near or over one. As Ram Dass said, "The quieter you become, the more you can hear."

We had another great night on Friday. I expanded the number of categories and each category had 5 songs. We cleared out everything except for the last 4 of 80's Rap. Total of 65 songs were sampled. It was a 4 hour blast and not once did anyone say anything about the shit show of a world.
