Wife brought home a used exercise bike that runs off of 6v dc and the power adapter is missing. I have a 9v adapter that I can make fit -will the extra 3 volts matter? I bet there is a voltage regulator on the motherboard that will protect the circuit from overload. What do you guys think?

There was probably alcohol involved with both parties. I let the magic smoke out of several things by not reading the voltage requirements first thing.

Factory installed magic smoke isn't available to the public. Only available to commercial accounts in bulk. Here's what happens when amateurs got ahold of a batch of it and the container ruptured.

They’re supposed to keep the smoke in the box. So many good electronics have been ruined by letting the smoke out.

You can try the 9V and see if it works. Chances are the extra 3 volts will not instantly do any damage. Still, 9V is 150% above the designed input. Long term, like more than a couple minutes, it is not a good idea.
They make universal power supplies. You select the output voltage and you can choose one of several connectors.
Also, there is no standard for polarity on connectors, if something does not work, try reversing the polarity.
