Damn. I had no clue. Bummer.
When I was in 8th grade, the first VH album came out. My buds and I would go to parties with that album tucked into our coats and when we got to the party we took over the 'turntable' with VH. I did get to see EVH one time. They played in Chicago after DLR came back to the band... so post-Sammy. They played at the United Center and only played songs where Sammy had not been the lead singer... there was NO Sammy stuff at the show. A good concert and I'm happy that I can say I saw EVH live.

RIP EVH VH played at my High School in 1976. They were playing at all of the local HS just before they hit it big. They used to play at an old dive bar- Walter Mittys- in a bad part of a bad town Pomona Ca. and a few of my friends would go see them play.

That was the place-I lived in Diamond Bar the next town over at the time. We only went into Pomona to buy beer from a drive-thru dairy .10 bucks, open your trunk and they would set a case of Michelob in there- they didn't care how old I was- didn't even check.

Was never a huge VH fan, but cant deny the band's influence in music, and especially EVH's guitar work influence. I know the guy man had several bouts with cancer; it's a shame to here, really.

My wife just reminded me that he played the solo in Michael Jackson's Beat it. I forgot about that. I was always amazed at the way his guitar sounded. I think I asked the music guys on the blueboard how a guitarist gets a signature sound... is it the guitar, the guitar player, some kind of electronic gadgetry? The first time I heard the beginning of Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love on the first album... that's when Eddie's "sound" hit me. The guitar sounds good throughout that whole song...

Gear only gets so far with a guitar player's sound: it may accent certain aspects of a players sound- but a signature sound and tone comes from a players hands, overall skill and how they apply the notes. ..an awful lot like brewing, come to think of it.

As stated before, more a casual fan to VH: but their debut record is a monster of a album.

The first time I heard the beginning of Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love on the first album... that's when Eddie's "sound" hit me. The guitar sounds good throughout that whole song... I was just watching an interview with him. He said that he thought someone was pranking him, because he didn't know a "Quincy" when Quincy Jones called him on the phone. He said he didn't think that he was the right fit for the "black kids" sound, but what the hell. Showed up, did some rearranging of some music, and contributed his 20 seconds. He said the "knock-knock" you hear right before his solo is Michael hitting a drum or something. Flash forward a few months after the release, and he tells a story how he's in Tower Records looking at some albums and the song comes on. It gets to the solo and the kids in front of him are to talking to each other and say something to the effect of "Can you believe they actually used an Eddie Van Halen wannabe for this solo?" He taps the kid on the shoulder and says "that's because it is me!" Whether the story is true or not... it's a good one. From the video... if it doesn't start right before the solo, it's at approximately 3:08

I read an article this morning about how the Van Halen brothers faced racism when they were young. Their dad was Dutch and their mom was Indonesian. They lived in Holland where people made fun of them because they were of a "mixed race". They moved to Pasadena in 1962 and didn't know any English and they were mocked here too. I didn't know ANY of that. Not that I would because in those days I was much more interested in the music than the backstory but it's pretty interesting.

Wish I could find the interview... whatever happened, he asked for some time to make liberties of his own.
