but at least the weather was nice. Not sad that our lawn guy didn't come by today so I could work uninterrupted and knock this project out.
Had to attack the landscaping in 2 phases this year; took care of the front and side garden/flower beds a couple of weeks back (our tiger lillies had overtaken a lot of the landscape, so a few got relocated to an empty spot at the back of our property, and the rest got binned), and today was the beds on the back (north) side of our house.
A lot of digging/shovel work; our hostas, ferns, and astilbe had all gotten overcrowded, so I thinned out probably 75% of the hostas, and half of both the ferns and astilbe. A few hostas got replanted; I was surprised at how much work it took to get everything dug out. We've had some rain this week, and the ground wasn't dry at all, so I'd figured the digging wouldn't be too horrible (silly me), but the plants put up a valiant effort to the end. But I won.
Next spring, I'm ordering a few cubic yards of mulch (planned to do that this spring, but the pandemic altered that plan) and taking care of the beds early in the spring. This project was a good 2-3 years overdue to get done, but it's finally done.

Nice work. I know the feeling of being outside landscaping all day. I had 5-6 cubic yards of mulch delivered this year and I spread it all out in one day. I also feel like when I order mulch, the truck comes and just dumps however much they want to dump (usually WAY more than I ordered). It was a 9am to 7pm day.

Awesome!
I hate yard work. I have a terrible green thumb. My dad always kept the gardens looking nice. Wish I had that skill.

A lot of people buy Johnny Buckets to deal with mulch when they do a lot of it. johnnyproducts.com/

Got some weed-n-feed delivered a few minutes ago; that will be deployed in a couple of weeks. Going to give Bayer Advanced a try this year; the bag said it kills existing crabgrass as a post-emergent herbicide, which would be a big plus. I've filled way too many lawn/leaf bags this fall already with crabgrass I've had to manually rip out of the lawn, so killing that crap off now, before it can regroup next spring, would be awesome.
Said crabgrass was already treated earlier this year with weed-n-feed in the spring, along with spot treatment later on, and still didn't die. Hoping this Bayer stuff does as advertised. I ditched Scott's Turfbuilder products starting this fall; they seem to feed the weeds, especially crabgrass, as much as the lawn, not to mention they're too expensive for what they are. No bueno in my book.

No bueno in my book. Keep me posted on that. Here, my choices seem to be Scotts and then generic stuff. I feel like it fertilizes the lawn quite nicely but is questionable on the weeds. If the Bayer stuff works well I would give it a shot. Where did you order it from? I don't think I have ever ordered fertilizer. We had some decent rain over the past 6+ weeks and the struggling lawn has come back nicely. I plan to do some spot-treatments with EZ-SEED next spring and then use a pre-emergent just as soon as everything has germinated. Also, I was thinking about this recently... I may use a pre-emergent as my regular fertilizer. It's not exactly 100% effective so why not fertilize the lawn and also prevent weeds all year? Cheers B. EDIT: The stuff I found late this summer was called Jonathon Green. It was the only product with a preemergent at my local Ace.

Look at using wood chips as mulch- In my area, I can get them for free. getchipdrop.com/I have done this before. I don't like the way it looks as much as the stuff I normally get. The stuff I order is some kind of triple-milled stuff that is dark brown and finer than this and it appears to be more like dirt with small pieces of wood in it. It's supposed to "cake up" when it gets wet which keeps it where it is. The big chunks are more likely to float away if you have a ton of rain (depending on where it is, clearly). It's probably been 4-5 times that I went to the village and got free wood chips but I generally regret going that route.
