My wife has a Surface Pro 4 with the attached keyboard. I see that it has a mini-display port along with a standard, full-sized USB port. I could get her a new display and use the mini-display port but how to get around the attached keyboard? I assume that the Surface display will automatically go black (or you can go into settings to do that) and I see that you can also go into settings and set "what happens when the 'lid' is closed". But the keyboard *IS* the lid. If you close it, you can't type. If it's open then the Surface display would be in the way of the external monitor unless it was raised up. Has anyone looked into this?

If she keeps it open, she can have two monitors available to her. Get a wireless mouse/keyboard combo that runs off of a single usb transmitter. I would think that would work. The Surface Pro runs off of Windows 10, so she should be able to add the additional monitor in the Settings. Her full size monitor wouldn't even have to mirror her Surface Pro, but be a second display. I have a Dell laptop and 2 external monitors for a total of 3 available to me. I don't have to use the laptop keyboard or mouse because of the wireless K/M setup.

Yeah, mine is the same... HP notebook with external monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse. The notebook is sitting 5' away from me with the lid just open enough to keep everything powered on. I did think about the wireless keyboard and mouse for her but knowing her she wouldn't like all of the screwing around with everything going from "desktop style" to "on the go" style. She uses this thing constantly and brings it everywhere. But she's also looking at this tiny screen and I know that when she works she would like a larger screen. I picked up this 21:9, 4k, curved monitor for mine and she likes it. Thanks for the ideas... I will keep noodling.

My usb transmitter is so small, she wouldn't even notice it was plugged in. Just disconnect the monitor and go. When she comes back to the desk, the transmitter is in range of the keyboard and mouse. Logitech has one that is super low profile. No huge dongle. And its so cheap that it's worth trying.

So I asked her about it and she seemed lukewarm. Also, she has not been working since the end of 2019. Long story that I may have gone into on the bluebored. But she's in the thick of interviews (which many places suspended for awhile because of the bug) and may be receiving an offer soon and will probably have a 'work machine' and she said then let's look into it. Yes, honey. Thanks for the replies, DS.

No problem!
I personally don't have a tablet type device. As much as I think I would "like" one, I don't think that I "need" one. There is, however, a device called ReMarkable that has that same "paper" look that the Kindles have, but is advances so that you can easily move files and write on it. I keep thinking I should, because I do go through a lot of paper. I just like the feel and ability of flipping through my documents.
