I went to take a gravity reading on a Spelt Lager and when I started the sample out came two chunks of mold. Not sure where they were as I cleaned everything the day of. All I can figure is they were stuck in the ball valve some how. Pissed but I am going to dump it. It may be fine but it will be in the back of my mind if I keep it.

Vibes, dude. Sucks to see a batch swirling the drain, but seems like the best choice.

Ugh, that sucks. I remember being a new brewer and dumping a batch down the sink. It made me physically ill to do it. All the time, ingredients, etc. I still don't like doing it but you have to follow the mantra... don't let subpar beer take up valuable real estate in one of your kegs. RIP Spelt lager.

Yup, I hate to do it but as Ken says it is for the best. Dumping batches I do not like has never been that big of an issue for me. I will get upset they did not come out how I expected but in the end I know I will not drink them and no sense having them around.

I too have dumped a couple. Not from the 5 gallon mark but from making several attempts over the course of a few weeks to see if things in the beer become desirable to my taste. Probably 3 or 4 in the 3.5-4.5 gallon range got shit canned.
I got very ill one time when I went to open up my keezer to take a pull off a keg and a corny keg emerged over the top of the keezer floating on beer. The picnic tap must have been crushed open and blew a whole keg into the bottom of the unit. That one hurt.

I've had a few that came out slightly off. The beer was passable but maybe had a small flaw like some diacetyl that didn't quite fade as much as I would like or some other slight off-flavor. In those cases I might drink it myself and suggest to others that they avoid it. I may also kill 2-3 gallons of it and then decide that's enough and dump the rest. When I know there are better beers waiting to get to the faucets, there's no point in drinking a beer that didn't come out the way you envisioned.

I did. It was ok but it will be in the back of my mind that there was mold in there. It may be for the best as the beer seems to be struggling to even ferment out. Started at 1.051 on the 5th and only at 1.028 today. Not sure why since I gave it a good starter of Bayern that was active when pitched.

Of course now after his comment and went and tried it again ... it really is pretty good. That damn Bayern just makes me want to drink the beer. UGH... decisions ... decisions.

At first I was going to say OH NOES THE BAYERN!! but now I wonder if the beer is saved. When I'm done using 940 I'm going to get some Bayern. Possibly my new favorite lager yeast.

Give it time. You can dump it later. But you can never undump it.
