A guy on AHA was asking about tap handles and I posted a few pics of the ones I made and said it was easy. He PM'd me and asked me if I would make him some. I told him I would consider it and that it's a lot easier to make a few at a time as opposed to one here and one there. As long as I have all the materials out, I could make four in just a little more time than I could make one. I told him I would paint them, do custom graphics, protect it with a sealer, add the threaded rod so he could use a ferrule on it to fit his taps, etc. The materials are not really expensive... it's mostly time. What does The Biergarten say as a fair asking price for such a fine piece of artwork thing? You guys have seen these...

$19.99 each. Your time and the needed materials ain't free. I think that's fair. Depending on details and time maybe as low as $15. Like if you did 4 the same color and same decal I could see lower.

He wants his own logo used and he wants four different labels/styles/beers. $20 per (plus he pays for shipping) is fine but to be honest... I have no real interest in going into the tap handle making business. If I make one that's not quite perfect for myself, I shrug and deal with it. My workmanship might be described as "good" but I'm certainly no artisan tap handle maker.

I agree on the $20 figure. This is one of those things like making beer where the labor outweighs the cost of materials. By the time it's finished you end up making peanuts per hour.

Then he sent me a sketch of the handle he wants with a "mast" and then a round top where the label would go. The chances of me creating a perfectly circular top with the tools I have are pretty low. I asked him to choose a simpler design. I also pointed him to some guys on Etsy that make MUCH nicer handles that I do. But he looked at those and said, "I like yours better". Ugh. This *may* be a nice project to have while isolating... head out to the garage and knock out some handles but it could also be stressful since I am not a pro woodworker by any stretch.

Now I'm trying to figure out if this guy is just effing with me. He keeps sending me pictures of tap handles that are far more complex to make than anything in the pictures and he keeps saying "this should be very easy and straightforward to make". No. I have a handheld jigsaw, a palm sander and a drill. I can't make a round Yuengling tap handle with a slanted face for the label or a Kona Lager tap with multiple layers or a stream of lava flowing down the center of it!

I'd tell him exactly what I was thinking. "Ya dude this ain't gonna work. I was only gonna do this because I'm a nice guy knowing I wasn't gonna make any money on it. Sorry but you need to find someone else. I ain't your guy."

He yielded a little bit so I'm going to make one in the shape he wants... a surfboard. But what's weird is that he says that him and his brew partners are pilots and they wanted a airplane theme... but his logo has no airplane and he selects a surfboard shape. Maybe I'm dealing with someone who doesn't have both oars in the water.

If he doesn't like it I'll use it myself and... lesson learned.

1. Make a handle in the shape of a bat. B. Print out the long email and wrap it around the bat 3. Find out where he lives D. Drive over there and hit him in the head with it

My isolation boredom made me drive over to a big box store and pick up a 1" x 4" x 6' piece of Poplar that I'm going to use. I'm not going to sweat this... if it works, great, if not, great. If I make them and he doesn't really like them and never asks me to do it again, great. Also, one of our big box stores here is Menards (regional?) and it turned out to be a good score there... soda, snacks, coffee, tissue, paper plates, napkins, paper towels, etc. I felt like a thief. All of the Targets, Walmarts and grocery stores have been out of this stuff here.
