Any yeast ranchers in these here parts? Going to try to rustle up some yeast from a bottle of Schneider Weisse... my and mrs shagg's favorite weissbier.

I've only done it with Orval dregs for the Brett but you will want a small, low gravity starter wort initially. Maybe 25-100ml? Step it up multiple times until you get the yeast amount needed. Some people flame the lip of the bottle before pouring.

Do I remember something about how the yeast in the bottle could be a different strain than the one used to ferment the beer? I have not tried to resurrect yeast from a bottle but I *did* use yeast that was sitting in the bottom of one of my kegs when it blew. I harvested it, made a starter and brewed with it and the resulting batch was delicious! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

After visiting the Schneider Weissbierbrauerei in Kelheim and bottling my own bottle, I'm fairly confident that the yeast in the bottle is the yeast they ferment with. And thanks for info 7! That sounds weird, I'd use you first name if I knew it! Mine's Jeff.

Can you use the Instant Pot to sanitize the test tubes and agar mix? I keep hearing two different things like it's good enough for yeast ranching but not for open-heart surgery.

I remember trying to do it with Dead Guy ale to get Pacman before it was available. I used a small amount like seven mentioned but I poured it into the bottle and started to build it up right in there.

They have so much of the fermentation strain that they're usually throwing it away. Why buy more for bottling?

Do you mean bottle culturing or keeping slants and plates? I've done both.

I did the same with sour beer dregs and I know it worked for those.

Timely thread, I enjoyed a bottle of De Ranke XX yesterday and intend on getting a couple more bottles to harvest the yeast. Deliciously bitter Blonde ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
