My marginal-quality electric cabinet smoker died recently and I need a new one. I didn't use it too much as I've also got a steel, wood-burning, off-set one, but it was pretty handy for smoking sausage, pastrami, and bacon.
Ya'll got any advice for a guy in the market for a new one?

I wish I could contribute. I have a Weber Genesis that is a few years old and before that I cooked over charcoal for 20+ years. I still have two old-school Weber charcoal kettles and a Smoky Joe. I use those for low & slow ribs (which I love making and eating) but lately I have been doing burgers and some chicken recipes over charcoal as well. I have no cool things here in this realm... no BGEs or anything like that. But I will be watching closely to see what comes up.

I went back and forth between electric and propane until I finally set on propane; Masterbuilt Pro stand up model. I wasn't adverse to electric and several of my friends have electric Masterbuilt's and use them quite frequently. My rational was storm season down here and no power. What I can say from what I hear, if you choose electric, don't go for the bluetooth, remote monitoring crap. I hear transmission is not so great. Stick to the basic digital and invest in a couple nice thermometers.

Last night I grilled shrimp on the Kettle. With the provision of time, charcoal is always my go to. The Genesis also gets a lot of use but charcoal is king. Kingsford as a matter of fact

I was so used to charcoal that the gas grill was super foreign to me. Then I got used to the gas and now grilling over charcoal (other than with the ribs which I do frequently) is kind of foreign to me... like, "How much heat do I want?". That's easy on the gas grill but with charcoal you need to choose the right amount of charcoal to use. You also have to factor in the time. The Genesis is SO freaking easy. I use it all year long. When it snows I shovel a path to the hot tub and the grill. But I like the flavor of things cooked over charcoal better. Smoke! Burgers, chicken, brats, dogs, fish or seafood, steaks, pork tenderloin and of course, ribs.

Hey smart aleck, I have two generators for glorious storm seasons The goal is to run them as needed for refrigeration and AC window shakers. The propane smoker can be used as an over too so there's my "wisdom." I have the Thermoworks Dot and love it.
