My wife, son and I are supposed to travel to Austin this weekend to see my daughter and older son. My wife is leaving Wednesday and my son and I are leaving Thursday and we're all staying until Sunday. We have a VRBO and we plan to stay there most of the time, cook at the house and maybe go to a place where my daughter is working for the summer where they rent boats, stand-up-paddles, canoes, kayaks, etc. We're all twitchy about going. Texas is now a hotspot/epicenter. The data shows that the Dallas area and the Houston area are far worse than Austin. But being on a plane twice and in two different airports twice each... yikes. I told my crew today that I was 51/49 in favor of going. As of now. What would The Biergarten do?

Stay home. Not a fun option, but IMO the safest.
If you end up going, be hyper-vigilant about social distancing, wearing a mask in public, and hand-washing/sanitizing.

We're ready with masks, anti-bac, alcohol wipes, etc.
One thing that concerns me is that if anyone gets sick and we say we went to Texas on a 4th of July getaway, anyone could say, "You're a dumbass" and they would be correct. My wife, son and I have been pointing out people who just do what they want, go to Wisconsin because it opened all the bars, etc. and we're like "Who do these people think they are?" and now we could be those people too and Im not very happy about that. Thanks B.

I get that people can't stay home forever, but if you end up taking your trip, at least you and your family are taking basic precautions to not get sick, and not make others sick.
No guarantee, of course, but IMO that's way better than taking no precautions and then getting sick.

That's one way to look at it. We're not being cavalier and going to bars or other crowded places. We would go to the grocery store and also go pick up beer which we do here. We could walk or swim or bike which we do here. I expect the airports to be lower-capacity than normal (especially going to Texas). We have many different styles of masks.

Don't go.
We are a hotspot with Springdale being especially bad right now. People are NOT wearing masks in spite of there being a city ordinance in Fayetteville. You will be exposed to asymptomatic positives. The people who need to be wearing masks the most aren't.

I'd say go, and just be careful. We flew to UNC 2 weeks ago for my son's PhD defense. Couldn't miss that. Chapel Hill was still very much shut down, but we'd rented a nice house and pretty much just hung out there. We flew Southwest. No occupied middle seats and everybody wearing a mask. It wasn't bad. My mom flew American. Flights were fully loaded and mask-wearing was not emphasized.

Thanks guys. We're flying American. One issue is that I can't independently say I'm not going... my wife is flying tomorrow and my son and I on Thursday. If I say I'm not going but they can go, my son flies by himself. He's 20 so it's clearly doable and he goes to school in Boulder so he's done it before but I will look like a turd for doing that. Pete, I do think it's possible to go and just take precautions. Austin is a little "hot" right now but nothing compared to Houston and Dallas. I'm waiting for news that would change my mind whether it comes from the media or my wife or son. At this point tomorrow I will need to decide one way or the other.

I don't know if I'm ready to board a plane and my wife is definitely not. However there has never been cleaner airplanes. It's the dumb feckers that make me more nervous than anything else.

COVID is a liberal hoax, they know this in Austin. It shouldn't be any issue.

I sincerely hope you're kidding.

I just spoke to my son in Austin. Apparently people in Austin are unhappy with the governor's handling of things. Texas is an unusual situation... it's generally red but its urban centers are growing rapidly. My son calls Austin the "blueberry in the tomato soup" but I'm sure Houston, Dallas and San Antonio are bluish too. Texas has three cities in the top ten by population... Houston (4), San Antonio (7) and Dallas (9). It sounds like Houston and Dallas have some issues but my son says Austin is manageable if you're safe and smart. Looks like we're going unless something big happens.

On the bright side, it always amazes me how good a Mr. & Mrs. T's cheap vodka bloody mary tastes when flying for a nice getaway In a plastic cup to boot.
