Love that soy sauce flavor in cooked food but not so much in the beer I drink. Picked up a 6 of Racer 5 and damn if it doesn't have that soy/umami back flavor. I don't have the most educated palate or sense of smell but it's there. Sami Klaus (sp) is the only beer I've ever had where I can appreciate a little of that. Any other IPA's that have it? Other beers? Do you find it okay outside of steamed dumplings and egg rolls? Thoughts, opinions, jeers?
Meanwhile my less than dank IPA is carbing nicely and drinks wonderfully without a side of Soy.

I watched a good cooking series on Netflix and they used that term quite a bit and I was not initiated. I had to look it up just now... a category of taste in food (besides sweet, sour, salt, and bitter), corresponding to the flavor of glutamates, especially monosodium glutamate.I think someone would have to make me eat something and tell me that it had this flavor otherwise I don't know that I would pick it out. If I tasted beer that had a soy sauce flavor I think I would have to use the vomit emoji.

How old is the bottle? Should be a code date on it. Racer 5 is bottle conditioned; chances are you have a old/poorly stored six pack. I'd say your tasting yeast autolysis; have experienced the same thing.

We no longer get Racer 5 here so I cannot help but man I remember loving that beer back in the day.

It is not bad. Their Hop Rod Rye is pretty excellent. From what I hear tit is a clone of Denny's Rye IPA. Which is a 180° twist: a production beer that is a clone of a homebrew.

I miss Bear Republic beers so much. It was my college go to, but I basically can't find it any more. That and Moylans.
