Indiana maltster making some fun things to try (carmelized malted corn anyone?) - just started offering to homebrewers. Still 10# increments though, so plan several experiments. Big on smoked malts.

Carmelized malted corn has my attention. Not one for pastries etc but thinking a neat perhaps Belgian forward dubbel or the Frankenstein variety. What's the full name of the brewery?

Just looked at their site now.
I buy my base malts by the 50/55lb sack (depending on the maltster) and these guys want $80+ for a 55lb sack of base malt. Before shipping, which for me (living the next state over in SW Ohio) is $35 for a single sack of grain, for a grand total of $115 for one bag of grain.
That's a little too spendy for me.

Yea, I'm at a cool site and thinking about getting a couple different 10# bags just to see what up. But that is pricey. I don't think I have the palate to discern the big flavor difference. Not jabbing here mind you. Just cost conscientious more than before.

I occasionally see new malts (along with yeast and also hops) and I always want to try them. The Mecca Malts have my attention but I haven't used any. I will buy Weyermann Barke products and they're very good, no question. But I'm with Poptop when I say that I may not have the palate to tell that I'm using premium malts. I have used Briess Pilsen, Avangard, MaltEurop, Rahr, Dingemans, CMC, Best Malz, Swaen and a hundred others. I like the Swaen products. The results are excellent, IMO and the price from LP is great. I do not look at malt lot information to determine how much nitrogen (or whatever) is in this particular sack of malt, etc. If I were to buy a sack of some off-brand malt and find that it lacked depth or dimension, I would probably cut it with Vienna or Munich, etc. to improve it.

It was the "Oddities" section that really caught my attention; not a big fan of smoked anything (other than meat of course, lol.) But yeah, definitely pricey. I tried to use their map for finding breweries that use their malts, but it was a weird setup.

I tried some local grains a while back. Man, they were rough. Probably best for a super hoppy beer where you don't care about grain flavor.
