I was mowing tonight and saw this little copperhead near my wellhouse. Too close to the truck/trees/rocks to mow over. Hopped off and got my shovel. Sucker was right near my truck where I had parked it outside to work on my tractor in the garage.
I know copperheads by sight very well but one of my co-workers always says "Look for the Hershey's kisses"
This one has them very clearly.

You would think he'd know not to mess with Chils. How often do you see those in your hood? I do not see snakes here. My sister and BIL moved from here to about an hour south of Atlanta when their kids were little. They were outside playing and then ran inside saying, MOM! Nake! Big nake!

I've seen a bunch of snakes so far. 4-5 foot black snakes are very common around here. No copperheads yet. Only saw one last year about that big.

Have killed 3 copperheads in 20yrs--all I've seen. I let non venomous snakes go. Had this big black snake hanging around for 7 years. I picked him up many times and moved him out of the yard.

Just video'ed this big beautiful boy out where I killed the copperhead. I made a note of where he was in relation to my corrugations and he measured out to 5 1/2ft long. Picked up his tail and he went all cobra on me. "I'll kick your ass!" he said. I hope he takes care of any more little copperheads lurking around.

I just realized what a snaky year this is becoming. I heard a thump the other night. Black snakes climb my porch swing chain trying to get up to my bird bottles and fall off on the porch. Went out and there was another big black snake on the porch. It was not the snake in the vid because his tail was stubby--something had taken the end off and it was blunt. I'm fine with the black snakes but not OK with copperheads.
Almost forgot I saw this pretty little ringneck on the driveway the other night.

Chils, may I ask where you live?
We get black snakes in our yard often but nothing in size like the one you showed. Also see a moccasin from time to time when I fish the lake in our neighborhood. Gators too. That copperhead is scary man.

Here's the big one. They don't get any longer but they do get fatter.

Putting up a hose hangar in the back yard. Had this 4ft black snake helper. He just hung around about a few feet from me for 10mins before he moved on. When I walked up to him he flattened out. You can see it in the pic, I think he was thinking "You don't see me. I'm flat on the ground." Pretty placid lil dude.

You got some scary neighbors, Chils. He was a nice lil fella. Only time I got nervous was when I was drilling the concrete block and looked around and he was gone. I had that moment when I realized I didn't know where he was and I thought "If I look down is he gonna be between my feet?"

But a black snake is not poisonous or dangerous in any way? If I knew that then I would think it was cool. One issue I have is that I see snakes so rarely that I generally don't know how to ID them. Pretty sure my wife and I came VERY close to a Coral Snake on our honeymoon. We were in MX and on an excursion out to an island where we explored, snorkeled and had lunch. While exploring we saw a black snake with pale yellow and pale pink stripes. We backed off and on the boat ride back we told our guides. They looked at each other with wide open eyes. One asked something like "was it yellow-pink-black or was it yellow-black-pink?". Dude. I don't know.

Red touch yellow... Kill a fellow... Red touch black... Friend of Jack... I like it but I'll probably forget it because I won't see a snake for another 10 years.
