The weight loss continues. Today, for the first time in many years, I'm under 200lb (~199.5 lb), and for reference, I'm 6' tall. Still a tad bit in the "overweight" region in terms of BMI, but the goal is to get down to ~180 or so. And once my beer sabbatical is over, session/lower-abv beers will be the way to go. Our thoughts are with you.

Just catching up on this.
As everyone else has said... good on you for recognizing it.
As for the lower ABV, whoever mentioned that they could drink a few 4.5 to 5.5 (whatever the range was) without any issues... I'm the same way. I think I would get bloated and uncomfortable before getting drunk.
Reset your body and mind... and go about doing what you need to do to enjoy the product of your hobby so that it doesn't destroy you. You got this!

Much appreciated all. That said, I'm extending my break to a full 90 days, to really let my body (especially liver) heal.
Depending on how things go and how I feel at the end of the summer, this break could end up being permanent.

Thanks drez; and yes, if for some reason I don't feel I can drink anymore, I'll be sticking around here.
Over the last few months, I've taken 2 different rounds of fairly high-powered antibiotics (Bactrim, back in April, and then a 10-d round of Clindamycin, which I finished yesterday) for an infected hair follicle that just wouldn't heal. Thankfully the area in question finally seems to be shrinking/healing, but I figured it's a good time for an extended break and heal up properly.
Had a phone consult with my primary care doc 2 weeks ago, and she said that if the Clindamycin didn't work, I'd have to come back in for a biopsy. Given the current state of the pandemic and risk of bringing Covid home, I didn't want to have to take that step.
I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be able to resume brewing this fall, focusing on much smaller abv beers from then on. But if I end up having to hang up my mash paddle for good and call it a career, it won't be the end of the world. This fall will mark 19 years since I first got into brewing. Not a bad run.

Whoa, this escalated quickly. At any point in that timeline did a medical professional suggest that you should watch your beer intake or stop drinking altogether? Believe me, as I age I consider the effects and that's why I also began to heavily moderate my beer intake. But after a short time I felt great and eased my way back in. I should mention... I don't drink any alcohol other than beer. I know people get into wine and spirits but it's not my thing. So to have only 4% to 5% beer as your only source of alcohol, I feel like you would have to drink a waterfall of beer every day to start seeing issues. Positive thoughts and vibes in B2000's direction.

It was more of an executive decison on my part. We got a new primary care doc last year, and at that time, she was recommending cutting back, as my liver enzyme levels were higher than the high end of "normal".
And with the way this year has gone so far, I'd been far less mindful of my consumption that I should've been. My wife noticed several times when I'd overdone it, and safe to say, she wasn't too happy about it. Can't say I blame her.
I've been feeling better overall since cutting out beer, but I know I need longer to let things heal properly. I know my stomach needs some time to recover from having taken 2 different rounds of antibiotics in the last 2 months, and from some research I've been doing, my liver could stand to go a good 90 days to recover properly.
Like I said earlier, I'm hoping this is the reset I needed to be able to enjoy beer/brewing much more responsibly going forward, but if for some reason it isn't and beer is a permanent no-go, I can live with that.

Continuing to wish you all the best in your goal and future decisions. You have certainly given this a consistent 360 consideration and seem to have all points covered, your personal health and family being on top

I have pretty much stopped drinking beer, but for a different reason. The carbs were too much. I pretty much make mixed drinks and wine, but not as often as I used to drink.
Your body will reset. Give it time.
