Yeah, that beer's clarity and head don't look great. I'm going to keep an open mind. I have not opened the box yet because I'm hip-deep in work and home improvement projects but eventually I'll try some. Are there dates on any of these cans?
It's probably reasonable to say that I have had plenty of cloudy German beers that weren't hefeweizens. Kellerbier, Zwickl, Landbier and some others have poured cloudy so I guess I wouldn't lose sleep over that as long as the beer tasted good.

Last year, all of the cans had the same date stamped on the bottom of the can (2023/05). Looks like they were probably marked by the packager, not the brewery, because they were all marked identically.

Yep. Exp. 24/03 this year. Way too long to give comfort.

This was a nice beer. Definitely a Festbier. Big, clean, crisp, medium hop flavor. Based on the name and the slight fruity taste I am guessing it is finished with Hallertau Tradition hops.

There was some talk on the LO board however long ago where they mentioned that German brewers (and many European brewers) don't add any hops with less than 30 minutes left on the boil. Not sure how accurate that is but I often think about it and wonder how certain beer flavors are achieved if it's true. Of course, there was also talk about how most European brewers don't use crystal malt either but then the article came out about the Czech brewery with the beer that had a rich, deep flavor and eventually the brewers admitted they added crystal. Looking forward to trying these beers but alas... the cans are still in the box.

I get a kick when they say they don’t use late hops or ‘caramel’ or ‘crystal’ malts but then you see a recipe with ‘Cara-xyz’ in it. Uh…that *is* caramel/crystal malt. For example: ck out ‘Low oxygen baseline recipes for German Lagers’ posted by TechBrau forum.germanbrewing.net/viewtopic.php?p=2586 on the German Brewing forum. All of them have Cara- malts in them. In the same post, he also said, “For hopping schedules, it is really up to you. A single 60 minute addition is fine if that's what you like. 70% at 60 min + 30% at 30 minutes is a really nice one for helles. 1/3 at 60, 1/3 at 40, and 1/3 at 15-20 is a great pilsner schedule.” When I go to the Weyermann website and look at the recipes, most have Cara- malts and late hop additions. smdh

Another one. First Carl Pils Unfiltered. Nice beer. These beers all taste very similar. Crisp clean. Some Pils malt flavor and to me all have a grape flavor. Not sure what to make of that. Is that oxidation?

Sauergut has a grape flavor. And in some of the beers I had from the calendar a few years ago the grape was overpowering imo. To the point it ruined the beer for me. Good crash course in what it tastes like though.

I do not like a beer with too much of a sauergut flavor. I love the idea of using soured wort to lower the pH and also [possibly] lend a very unique and hard-to-duplicate flavor to your beer but if it's too much... it's not working for me.

So far I think every beer (4 so far) I have had from this pack has that grape flavor. I have had German lagers without that flavor (Weihenstephan Original for example). So, I’m surprised 4 different breweries have such similar process. But, I know nothing about brewing practices in Germany.

Makes me wonder if they are the same beer with different labels.

Makes me wonder if they are the same beer with different labels. They don’t taste exactly the same. Just 4 out of 5 have that grape flavor. Maybe the German Pale didn’t have that but I want to say it didn’t. The next post is about a beer that doesn’t…

Teisnacher 1543 Festmärzen tonight. This one is pretty cloudy (naturtrüb=cloudy). It has a bready flavor (maybe from the suspended yeast). I like it. Low and behold, no grape flavor. PS. I like any beer with “knocker” in the name Here is a description from the app.
