I am having to put both my hobbies on hold for a while.
On Sunday I was trail running on Monte Sano (a local mountain/hill). I tripped and fell on my arm. I broke my right humorous (upper arm). Luckily it was a group run. A friend walked me out over a mile to my car. My wife was waiting to take me to the hospital. I was actually okay. The break was pretty bad but maybe due to shock and adrenaline I wasn’t in much pain.
When I got to the ER they took off my jacket to look at the wound. Here’s the nasty part. Hide your eyes if you have a weak stomach. Apparently the jacket had applied pressure to the wound. Once off, blood started squirting on the floor, on my shoes, etc. I got light headed fast. The nurses and doctors also busy fast. They stopped the bleeding with more pressure and got me taken care of.
I had a spiral fracture 2/3rd of the length of the bone. It had pierced the skin. I now have a plate and screws to hold the bone together. I got out of the hospital this morning. I feel pretty good actually.
I can’t run of course. I can’t brew until I get more use of my arm and maybe a pump.
I can’t drink beer either since I am on pain medicine.
But, all’s well that ends well. I survived and will run and brew another day!

Who knew running was a contact sport. Dang brother. Heal quickly!
Edit: let me know when your stash runs out after you quit taking pain meds and I can bottle a few from my taps to gift you while you’re down. I have a Bourbon Barrel Porter and a Bock right now. Dry Stout is my next brew (probably Fri).

Oh man, I'm glad you're okay and in good spirits. That sounds truly nasty. Also, it's a good reminder that we need to be careful out there. Not sure of your age but I am 56 and often do activities or act as if I'm 26 which is NOT good. I'll get up on ladders, the roof, etc. and I like to bike a good 20-30 miles when the weather is cooperating. I know I could break myself on the bike but you don't think about those things when you're zipping along and everything is okay. One issue is that I can't "take it easy". I like to go hard. I was on a biking trip in Croatia once and the road was downhill and zig-zagging. The view I was looking at was so unreal that I took my eyes off the road and crashed. I almost went over a steep embankment. I killed the bike and had scrapes and scratches but the van trailing us gave me a new bike and I finished the ride.

We are flying to Denver for a 10 day trip. I plan to take advantage of the local breweries. When I come back from Denver I will be able to drink. I’ll have my son help me brew one or batches before he heads back to school. He is turning 21 in 5 days and I’ve got a American Lager with Edelweiss ready to keg for him now.

Based on lots of reflection after the surgery, this is my problem. I run trails like a teenager. They are dangerous and I’m kind of an idiot. I also fell a week before and hurt the same shoulder. It was just recovering when I went for this run. I’m wondering if I already had weakened the bone and didn’t know it. I’m 50. But, running has been like a mid-life awakening slash crisis for me. I love being competitive (at least in my age group). But, I think I pushed myself too hard and was tired. In the hospital after surgery, my wife says she hadn’t seen me this relaxed and rested in a long time.

PS. That picture and the fact that they immediately gave you another bike is crazy! When she came around the corner and saw what happened I apologized for killing the bike. She asked if I was okay (see my shirt... that's blood. My legs were cut up pretty bad) and I said yes. She said "What do you want to do?" and I said "Well, I don't want to ride in the van the rest of the way that's for sure". She said, "Want another bike?". Yes, please. I got to the meeting spot and our guide Emily says, "So, how are you feeling?" and I said OH, ####ING GREAT!". They warned us about that spot and everything but like you said... I was an idiot and pretty much had no regard for my body. Have fun in Denver. I was just there in mid-October.

I am having to put both my hobbies on hold for a while. … How’s the healing going? Well, you had to ask didn’t you?! The arm is coming along great. But, I fell and broke my hand! I had another surgery. Another plate and screws! I feel like an idiot. I went to the doctor for a check up. He says my balance and reflexes are all good. I’m headed to the eye doctor next. Just waiting on the appointment (doctors are too busy).
