I've been making some beers with very nice hop presence lately mostly because the hops are coming from Hop Heaven or YVH and have been really fresh. I have a helles on tap now and my Hallertau Mittelfruh hops came from Artisan hops which I believe is in bed with MoreBeer. I could tell these hops were not quite the caliber I've been getting but figured it would be okay. It's okay but you can really tell the difference. Muddy hop character and no fresh & lingering fresh hop taste. I should have known but I feel like now I have pretty good proof of this issue. I should toss these hops. I actually made a gold lager recently with some really nice and fresh Liberty hops. I ordinarily wouldn't do that but this whole "fresh hops are better than the correct hops" thing took over.

I haven't purchased any from YVH recently but opened up a fresh pack of Edelweiss from Hop Heaven about 10 days ago and they were so fresh, dark green and sticky from all the (not dried out) resins. I've used the Artisan labelled hops before when I didn't have any other choice and they weren't very good.

That's one of the reasons I prefer pellets. Or maybe yours were pellets, Ken?

That's one of the reasons I prefer pellets. Or maybe yours were pellets, Ken? Yes. I always use pellets. When good hops arrive here, they're vibrant green, sticky and very aromatic. If they look drier or the color seems off, if the aroma is less evident, etc. then I'm usually a little disappointed. I think my approach in the past would be "the boiling wort will reactivate the magic!!" but that's not true. Getting hops that are in really good condition makes much better beer and I'm only realizing how important that is in the last few years. Also the concept of using better hops instead of the correct hops: Your Sterling is in better shape than your Saaz? Use the Sterling in the Czech Pilsner.

My lhbs has those packs of Yakima Chief hops just sitting out on a rack. Needless to say, I don't buy hops there.

Has anyone used a can of hops from Yakima Valley Hops? I got a can of Galaxy free when I renewed my AHA membership. I haven’t used them yet. It’s definitely cool packaging and YVH is a pretty good hops supplier.

This is one of those things that might sound snobby but I have been stung by poorly-handled hops and I have seen the light when the hops are right. The can of hops? Never heard that one. I do like YVH though... always good, fresh hops that are well-packaged and in excellent shape when I get them.

And they do not sell them in six packs. I guess it depends on how they can them? Do they inject nitrogen? I don't know, just asking.

Struck me as gimmicky Felt the same, I got some on black Friday last year and open the can to use what I need and the rest goes in the food saver bag. I do not see the point of the can.

What did you use, 8.5 cans? Had to save half a can? Seriously, tho, I guess an unopened can would stay fresh longer than a bag.

The bags from Yakima Chief, for instance, have excellent storage qualities.
